Howdidly Doo.
So i have to come clean about a few things. First off, I am not a pagan, witch, heathen, new ager, astrologer, ceremonial magician, wiccan, thelemite, conjurist/rootworker, druid, kabalist, HGDA, or chaote (well, Liber MMM still is one of the most worthwhile bits of reading and practice to have ever come out of western esoteric thinking, and I still refer back to it from time to time, so maybe a little chaote). I read the obligatory famous and common grimmoirs and poked at stuff in highschool and the first few years of college, but it never really clicked.
I never really have been any of those things (re-reference the previous paranthesised statement for shits and giggles). I have been neck deep within Afro-Cuban religious practices for a while. I am a Kardecista (Spiritist), a Palero, and an Aborisha and am gradually working up the nerve to make Kariocha.

So why am I here? I had to think about it for a while, but eventually came up with an answer - To understand the culture of it.

I have friends who are of different alignments and practices. In my spiritist circle I have a number of different kinds of people that I work with and do work for - I am trying to understand where they are coming from spiritually so I can better understand them and address their needs, but doing so in a way that doesn't make me sound like an idiot or an asshole.

Palo has a rich tradition of calling out peoples bullshit. Wether its just telling someone they are wrong to their faces or battling with puja (pokes, songs that test knowledge, provoke a response, and are often used to see how much a priest actually knows about their own tradition and history in public settings). I have a hard time judging when and when not to make the culturally appropriate "What the hell are you talking about" face that the various teachers I have worked with over the years have dumped on me everytime I asked or did something questionable. Its a face I will continue to get until im dead. Im trying to figure out when not to make it when doing a reading or a limpia for someone who doesn't deserve it. To do that, I need to have a better feel for whats what within your particular world.

Oh, and making new virtual aqcuantainces is cool too, I guess.

But beyond that, i'm willing to go the other way as well. Lot's of stuff from my type of things that are grossly missunderstood within the pagan community. as well.

Teka, I applaud you trying to understand the folks you are dealing with. I would love to learn more about your tradition as well. As Raevan said, it might be a little hard to explain how "normal" the things you are seeing are, without some specifics. And what is "normal" for a Wiccan won't carry ove...View More

Thanks for all who have offered some feedback - IE - Specifics! That is the hard part in this project, simply because there is a great diversity. In Palo, we have a similar issue - we are know as Las Reglas Bantues (plural). The various "branches", however different they may be on the outside, hav...View More

Hmm, not sure if this will help or not, but among various Wiccans, it seems like there are a few commonalities: belief in a Goddess and a God (sometimes specific deities from a pantheon but often not - some form of masculine and feminine deity), the Wheel of the Year (eight Sabbats plus full moons),...View More
